These qualities were to determine his unique place in the history of music. His subsequent career as one of France’s leading orchestral conductors and film music composers helped further shape his musical thought and style.

(Re-)Sounding Silence - Henri Tomasi’s The Silence of the Sea

Conference presentation

'Words, Music and Silence' symposium,

Bournemouth University & The Open University

In this conference presentation, I will speak about the Henri Tomasi's one-act opera based on the Résistance novel, ‘The Silence of the Sea’. The novel was published clandestinely in 1942 by Jean Bruller (1902-1991), under the pseudonym Vercors, and tells the story of a French man, his niece and the German officer billetted to their house during the war. The officer, a composer, attempts conversations about music and literature but is met with silence. The novel dramatizes silence as a means to articulate often antithetical and paradoxical themes. Silence becomes an act of resistance, a symbol of oppression but also of passive acquiescence, indicative of moral conscience and of human weakness. It is a means to preserve human dignity but also express shame and submission, leading towards the final silencing of words, of music and ultimately, of love in death. In this paper, I argue that Tomasi’s opera frames this silence, not as an absence of sound, but as a (re-)sounding of the subtexts of the novel in the liminality of the transmedial space in between words and music by disrupting and reversing the functions of the orchestral, vocal and spoken voice, through a deconstruction and re-layering of structures of sound, time and style.

Manon Lescaut, sphinx étonnant!

Illustrated Lecture, Alliance Française Tour, Winchester

Manon Lescaut had all the hallmarks of becoming a successful opera: a timeless tale of love, passion and betrayal, a strong female protagonist who embodies an éternel féminin shrouded in mystery, a series of spectacular and dramatic scenes taking us from Paris to New Orleans, and the final tragedy of Manon’s untimely death. And yet, it was not until the middle of the 19th century that any significant operatic version of the story saw the light, the Abbé Prévost’s novel becoming then the subject of no less than five operas in short succession, including Auber’s Manon Lescaut in 1856, Massenet’s acclaimed Manon in 1884 and Puccini’s popular Manon Lescaut in 1893.  In this illustrated lecture, Emilie Capulet explores in music Manon's ‘enigmatic’ character, described in Musset’s poem Namouna, “Manon! Sphinx étonnant! Véritable sirène!”.

Works for cello and piano by Nadia Boulanger and César Franck

Joseph Spooner, cello, Emilie Capulet, piano

Vestry Hall, University of West London

The programme will include Nadia Boulanger's Three Pieces for cello and piano (1915) and Franck's violin Sonata in A Major (1886) in its version for cello.

Nadia Boulanger originally composed two of the three pieces in 1911 for organ and arranged them for cello and piano three years later.

César Franck composed his famous Sonata for Violin and Piano in A Major for his friend, the violinist, Eugène Ysaïe, on the occasion of his wedding. It is in its cello and piano version that Joseph Spooner, cello, and Emilie Capulet, piano, will perform this passionate and virtuosic work.

Henri Tomasi, musicien engagé et humaniste

Lecture-recital

Alliance Française Tour

Billericay

Finding much of his early inspiration in his Mediterranean roots and in the lyrical essence of Corsican song, Tomasi began his career as a talented classical and jazz improviser with a flair for musical drama, having played the piano for the first silent films in the cinemas of Marseille and Paris. These qualities were to determine his unique place in the history of music. His subsequent career as one of France’s leading orchestral conductors and film music composers helped further shape his musical thought and style.

The Piano Boat Launch Weekend

London Canal Museum, Regent's Canal

Rocking The Piano Boat with Beethoven’s Tempest Sonata, Henri Tomasi’s ‘Marine (Mouettes)’ (Seascape - Seagulls) and Satie’s Holothurie (a sea cucumber!) for the official launch of what must be the smallest floating concert hall in the world complete with its own Steinway grand piano.

This brand new widebeam canal boat named the ‘Rachmaninov’, was designed and is manned by concert pianist Masayuki Tayama and his fiancée and fellow pianist Rhiana Henderson. They will be taking visitors on musical cruises along the Regent's Canal in London and up the Grand Union Canal into the beautiful green landscapes of the Colne Valley. It has been featured in The Times as well as in a television programme on Channel 4.

An exciting and original concept which has never before been attempted.

Conference presentation

Research Day, University of West London

During the 1920s and 30s, most French radiophonic music was composed within the context of the radio play, but a lack of surviving primary sources and the ephemeral nature of live radio performance have meant that much of these rich artistic experimental practices have gone undocumented and their legacy has been largely overlooked.  I consider the ways in which the medial boundaries between theatrical and musical performance were redefined through radiophonic techniques, and how these, in turn redefined the scope of radio art more than a decade before Schaeffer’s widely acknowledged radiophonic experiments in acousmatic music. ï»¿

Postponed to 2022 due to COVID19
To celebrate Beethoven's  250th birthday this year, Emilie Capulet and Mark Dancer will bring to life the Viennese musical salon in a performance of his momentous 5th Symphony in a historic version for piano 4-hands by composer Hugo Ulrich, himself born in 1827, the year Beethoven died. Robert Schumann once exclaimed about this symphony that "no matter how frequently heard, whether at home or in the concert-hall, this symphony invariably wields its power over men of every age like those great phenomena of nature that fill us with fear and admiration at all times, no matter how frequently we may experience them. This symphony, too, will be heard in future centuries as long as music and the world exist". The evening concert will also feature other Viennese works for piano 4-hands, including Schubert's Fantaisie in F minor and Mozart's lively piano sonata in F Major.

Manon Lescaut, sphinx étonnant!
Illustrated Lecture, Alliance Française Tour, Sutton
Postponed due to COVID19

Perspectives on Authenticity in the Representation of Classical Music in Contemporary Fiction

Representing 'Classical Music' in the Twenty-First Century
AHRC Research Network
Exeter University
In this presentation, I will be focussing on Ishiguro’s five short stories, Nocturnes, subtitled ‘Fives Stories of Music and Nightfall’, published in 2009, and the way in which he creates a correlation between the musical experiences featured in the stories and his character’s ambivalent relation with concepts of authenticity and identity. I will be arguing that Ishiguro is challenging the traditional representation of classical music by placing it within a popular music framework and using authenticity to blur the traditional distinctions between art cultures. Whilst Ishiguro offers us a mise-en-scène of musical practices/authenticities within the fictional worlds he is creating, he is also encoding the authenticity of his own voice within a meta-narrative on artistic creation understood as musical performance.
