(Re-)Sounding Silence - Henri Tomasi’s The Silence of the Sea
Conference presentation
'Words, Music and Silence' symposium,
Bournemouth University & The Open University
In this conference presentation, I will speak about the Henri Tomasi's one-act opera based on the Résistance novel, ‘The Silence of the Sea’. The novel was published clandestinely in 1942 by Jean Bruller (1902-1991), under the pseudonym Vercors, and tells the story of a French man, his niece and the German officer billetted to their house during the war. The officer, a composer, attempts conversations about music and literature but is met with silence. The novel dramatizes silence as a means to articulate often antithetical and paradoxical themes. Silence becomes an act of resistance, a symbol of oppression but also of passive acquiescence, indicative of moral conscience and of human weakness. It is a means to preserve human dignity but also express shame and submission, leading towards the final silencing of words, of music and ultimately, of love in death. In this paper, I argue that Tomasi’s opera frames this silence, not as an absence of sound, but as a (re-)sounding of the subtexts of the novel in the liminality of the transmedial space in between words and music by disrupting and reversing the functions of the orchestral, vocal and spoken voice, through a deconstruction and re-layering of structures of sound, time and style.

During the 1920s and 30s, most French radiophonic music was composed within the context of the radio play, but a lack of surviving primary sources and the ephemeral nature of live radio performance have meant that much of these rich artistic experimental practices have gone undocumented and their legacy has been largely overlooked. I consider the ways in which the medial boundaries between theatrical and musical performance were redefined through radiophonic techniques, and how these, in turn redefined the scope of radio art more than a decade before Schaeffer’s widely acknowledged radiophonic experiments in acousmatic music.

Manon Lescaut had all the hallmarks of becoming a successful opera: a timeless tale of love, passion and betrayal, a strong female protagonist who embodies an éternel féminin shrouded in mystery, a series of spectacular and dramatic scenes taking us from Paris to New Orleans, and the final tragedy of Manon’s untimely death. And yet, it was not until the middle of the 19th century that any significant operatic version of the story saw the light, the Abbé Prévost’s novel becoming then the subject of no less than five operas in short succession, including Auber’s Manon Lescaut in 1856, Massenet’s acclaimed Manon in 1884 and Puccini’s popular Manon Lescaut in 1893. In this illustrated lecture, Emilie Capulet explores in music Manon's ‘enigmatic’ character, described in Musset’s poem Namouna, “Manon! Sphinx étonnant! Véritable sirène!”.
